Pen:Chant and Gorilla Present SHE PWR
Manchester’s most eclectic mixed-bill cabaret night, Pen:Chant, has teamed up with the city’s cross-cultural party venue, Gorilla, to create an unmissable party of inspiration SHE PWR to celebrate International Women’s Day 2018.
Pen:Chant are a nomadic neo-variety night featuring the very best local, national and international acts from the worlds of comedy, live music, spoken word and performance. They've come together with Gorilla to present an International Women's Day Special on the 8th March called SHE PWR.
Boasting a stellar all female line up, SHE PWR includes panel discussions, live music, free cocktails and canapés, craft fair, DJ's, comedy, spoken word, cabaret, visual art, glitter *and* a raffle. The event will raise money for Manchester-based charity Women Asylum Seekers Together (WAST).
Pen:Chant's curated bill features acclaimed writer and spoken word artist Femi Keeling, standup character comedian Cam Spence, live music from Honeyfeet's Ríognach Connolly and Ellis Davies, Manchester's community SHE Choir and is hosted by alt cabaret live wires Eggs Collective (below) in their first gig on home turf since the success of their television debut on BBC2’s Performance Live.
"The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Press for Progress”, a call to action for women everywhere to continue to fight for parity. It’s about being vocal, standing up and making yourself heard, as women are doing all over the world. And what better way to be heard than by throwing a massive, inclusive, no-holds-barred party!"
Rachel Moorhouse, Pen:Chant
The event is split into three sections: From 6pm - 8pm it's free entry to the bar and studio where Gorilla will be hosting Q&A sessions with prominent female creatives and entrepreneurs, a maker's market selling locally made crafts, live music, DJs, cocktails, canapés, book swap and a glitter station.
Then, at 8pm, the night will kick off in earnest with a very special edition of Pen:Chant, guest hosted by alt-cabaret live wires Eggs Collective. This will be a ticketed event with proceed going to WAST, featuring comedy, spoken word, live music, cabaret comperes, DJs and a raffle.
There will be a free after-party in the bar featuring Mancunian female DJ’s and empowerment anthems ’til the early hours.
Pen:Chant is a night of eclectic, alternative cabaret, that has been bringing incredible artists from spoken word, live music, comedy and cabaret since 2013. For this International Women’s Day special they have cherry-picked a characteristically diverse bill of female artists. There will be lyrical spoken word from acclaimed writer, playwright and performer Femi Keeling (pictured above right), uproarious standup character comedy from rising star Cam Spence (above left), and sumptuous sounds from Ríognach Connolly and Ellis Davies of Honeyfeet fame in addition to adaptations of well loved classics from Manchester’s 20 woman-strong SHE Choir (below).
Prior to the performances will be an array of free activity, bringing people together to share ideas and ask questions. There will be live interviews and panel discussions from prominent local women from Manchester’s cultural, academic, business and charity sectors. These will include Rose Marley (Sharp Project), Abigail Ward (Manchesters’ Digital Music Archive), Henrietta Rolla Smith (Afrodeutsche), Gemma Gore (NTIA, We Are Indigo PR). In the bar SHE PWR will have Meat Free DJ’s and Hattie Pearson on the decks and a host of acoustic acts to enjoy in the smaller space between 6pm and 8pm.
Additionally, the main event space will host a mini market of prominent female creatives and entrepreneurs selling locally made crafts and gifts. During this section of the evening there will be complimentary cocktails and canapés from hosts and curators Gorilla and even a charity glitter station hosted by local female art collective and creative community, Girl Gang Manchester.
"International Women's Day is a fantastic global event and we're so proud to be a part of this year and to be raising funds for the brilliant women of WAST."
Ben Mellor, Pen:Chant
